During my 6-month fellowship in the United Kingdom, I had the privilege to work at two renowned centers for Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) for Primary Immunodeficiencies (PID): the Great North Children’s Hospital in Newcastle upon-Tyne and the Great Ormond Street Hospital in London.
From my first day, I participated in the daily patient handover between nurses, consultants, and registrars in the BMT Ward, learning about patient care and evaluations post-transplant. Following the handover, with consultants we analyzed laboratory results and examined patients in the ward, providing updates to their parents. This experience allowed me to witness the entire process of transplantation in PID under the guidance of world-wide recognized but also patient consultants who generously answered all my questions.
