Dear ESID Juniors and ESID community,

I am happy to update you on our most recent activities. You will see that our last months have been pretty busy!!!

We are continuously trying to maintain and to improve the many already established Junior activities, as well as to design and explore potential future events interesting and beneficial for our community. Some of these activities are summarized here.

ESID Summer School (Calambrone, Pisa, Italy)

This year Summer School in Italy we had a great time. We had a fantastic faculty, highly motivated students, science, teaching, informal learning session, the opportunity to share personal experiences in the care for patients with PID mixed up with career tutoring sessions and a great last-night-out dinner with dancing in an amazing setting. As part of the social program this year we invited the students as well as the faculty to bring some culinary highlights of their respective countries for really tasty international-flavorful picnic at the beach. We had lots of fun and learned a lot!

Following the great feedback from the last edition we organized also this year the “masterclass sessions”. These sessions include 1.5 hours (45 min each) of interactive learning in small groups under the lead of faculty members in an informal manner.

According to their preferences the students were invited to attend two of the following sessions: Immune modulation in PIDs. Targeted and broad-spectrum approach, Functional tests as a way to a tailored and individualized therapy (K Warnatz), Lymphoproliferation and PID (E Gambineri), Gene Therapy and Gene Editing. Challenges and opportunities ahead (I Meyts), GI disease in PID (K Sullivan) and clinical applications of NGS. Know your basics and mid the pitfalls (B Grimbacher). Although very difficult to treat these topics in such a short time the faculty members as well as the students did a great job and it was easy to see that both sides really enjoyed these sessions.

The informal, interactive, case-based teaching approach together with the possibility to share and exchange experiences with PID makes (at least in my opinion) the ESID summer school to THE MOST IMPORTANT EDUCATIONAL HIGHLIGHT and I therefore encourage every Junior with interest to pursue a career in our field to mark the date for the next edition in his/her calendar and to make sure to put forward their application!!!

I would also like to take the opportunity and thank Eleonora, our ESID educational WP chair, our extraordinary faculty, our generous sponsors, our fantastic students and last but not least Laurie from Kenes for their hard work and dedication!

ESID 2017 Edinburg Focus Meeting

This is the next BIG PID event on our PID calendar!

In Barcelona, we had an incredibly high representation with more than 300 Junior attendees and we are very much looking forward to seeing you all again this year in Edinburgh.

From the Juniors perspective, we are preparing the ESID Junior Workshop “Interactive Cases-Expect the Unexpected”. Similar as in Barcelona this workshop aims to combine science, clinical challenge, fun, interaction and networking in peers- teaching- peers format.

After the huge success of its first edition in Barcelona where we had 3 exciting mystery cases presented by Shahrzad Bakhtiar, Jelena Rascon, Bianca Tesi and Sara Ciullini, an amazingly brave expert panel (Steve Holland, Austin Worth and Mikko Seppänen) and Ellie Haddad our outstanding moderator.

We are excited to tell you that Elie Haddad has already confirmed to be our moderator again and we will soon announce our senior experts panel.

Interested to collaborate and surprise us with a mystery case at ESID 2017?

All Juniors are more than welcome to participate and to submit their “mystery cases”!

We are looking for Juniors to give us a (5 min) presentation of an instructive mystery case, ideally including a PID diagnosis in a patient with autoimmune manifestations.

Please send us your case (PowerPoint slides) before the 31st of July!

We would then select the most appropriate cases and help you to adapt them to the final interactive format!

Don’t wait any longer and send us your exciting cases ( or just contact us in case you have any questions.

In addition, and with the help of some “local” folks we are working on our Scottish version of the Juniors Networking Party.

We will keep you updated on all this!

ESID Juniors Educational videos

As mentioned in the last newsletter a group of ESID Junior Members, started to produce educational videos about PIDs and lab techniques. The aim of this project is to produce a very valuable educative material for Juniors interested in the field. The first 3 videos will be completed and launched very soon. You’ll be able to enjoy them on the e-learning platform  ESID Education Online in the next few months. If you’re interested to be part of the team, please contact Olivier Gilliaux (   ). There are no technical skills required!!!

Our ESID Junior community is steadily growing in members and productivity, resulting in an increasing number of Junior activities and benefits.

All this wouldn’t be possible without the continuous support and input of all of you. Therefore, I would like to thank you for your help, enthusiasm, joy and commitment!

And…. as usual I would like to invite everybody to participate and get involved!

Don´t hesitate to approach me ( or your country representatives with any suggestion, comment or idea you may have!

Have a great Summer and see you in Edinburgh!!

Yours,

Peter
